How to get your business on Google Maps

When someone nearby searches for what you do, Google Maps is often the first thing they see. Here's how to get your business on the map—step by step.

Step 1: Create your Google Business Profile

Google Maps pulls listings from Google Business Profile (it's free). Go to google.com/business, sign in with a Google account, and add your business name, category, and contact info.

Step 2: Verify your business

Google needs to confirm the business is really yours—usually through a short video or a postcard in the mail. This can take a few days. Until you verify, you won't appear on the map, so don't skip it.

Step 3: Fill out your profile completely

A complete profile ranks better and earns more trust. Add:

  • The right category (be specific)
  • Hours, phone, and website
  • Your service areas (if you go to customers)
  • Photos of your work, team, or storefront
  • Your services and a short description

Step 4: Get reviews

Reviews are one of the biggest factors in how high you show on the map. Ask happy customers to leave a Google review, and reply to every one. A steady stream of real reviews beats a competitor with none.

Step 5: Keep it active

Post updates, add new photos, and respond to reviews and questions. Google favors profiles that stay active—it signals your business is real and open.

Why some businesses still don't show up

If you've done all this and still aren't ranking, it's usually one of three things: the profile isn't fully complete, you have few or no reviews, or your area is very competitive. That last one is where local SEO makes the difference—optimizing your profile and website to out-rank nearby competitors.
